Weekly Round-up: April 9

Happy long weekend everyone! Just a reminder that the Easter bunny is an essential service worker, but is also an avid physical distancing practitioner, so the bunny won’t be organizing any Easter egg hunts in the park. I have you covered with your weekly round-up. Remember to wash your hands before you indulge in some well-deserved chocolate.

A lot of people have been struggling to find ways to support each other safely through the pandemic. The best thing we can do is stay home but if you are financially able, any donation could go a long way. Earlier this week I took a look at some worthy organizations for your consideration.

If you live in the surrounding Ottawa area, here are specific COVID-19 resources available for you. I put together a guide to help you navigate these support services.

Elsewhere, Matthew Bisson reported that the Summer Solstice Indigenous Festival has been cancelled this year but the organization is working on an online platform that will showcase all of your favourite vendors, artists and musicians.

What to watch, listen to, read and eat this weekend

I love a good long weekend, but I think it may be tough for some of us to fill the time given our unique set of circumstances. Here are a few suggestions to keep you busy.

Watch: The Plot Against America. This is not for the faint of heart, but it is compelling television. Based on Philip Roth’s thought-provoking novel of the same name, the show offers up an alternate America taking place in the 1940s. You can watch the show Mondays on HBO or on Crave.

Listen: Listen to Mimi O’Bonsawin’s album Trillium to prepare for her very first live concert on Facebook. Keep your eye out for that concert next Wednesday at 7.

Read: The Book of Negroes or The Illegal. A rainy weekend is the best time to curl up with a good book. Lawrence Hill is one of my favourite authors; his sweeping narratives carry me for a few days.

Eat: If you are missing some of your favourite local goods, try making an order from The Vendors Project. You can get fresh strawberries, local tea and artisanal ice cream straight to your door. A perfect chance to treat yourself this long weekend while also supporting local businesses.
