- What is the story behind your song, “My Boo”?
Some songs can take days to write while others just pour out of you like nothing. “My Boo” was one of those that pretty much wrote itself. The idea behind the song was really honest — find the joy in simple, daily things and don’t take the sweetness of life for granted. It’s about gratitude, just going with the flow, living in the moment and being with the ones you love.
- How do you find inspiration? Is there a particular place or state of mind that gets the creativity flowing?
Inspiration for me happens when I’m out doing my thing and living life. Ideas come at the most inconvenient times — when I’m driving in the car (and then I have to pull over) or I’m in yoga class and I have to step out to get the idea down on my iPhone. As quickly as an idea comes in my mind, it can just as quickly disappear too! I have to pay attention and just have that awareness when inspiration strikes.
- What does your songwriting process look like? When songwriting, do you tend toward lyrics or music initially?
Normally it just starts with a key word or an idea or message that I want to explore, and sometimes it can be a melody too. I’ll put that down in my phone and then I’ll get the guitar and try to finish it off — it’s not usually on the same day but it does happen! Very often, I’ll have three quarters of the song done and won’t finish it until I’m working with another co-writer or my producer.
- What is your favourite concert of all time?
That’s a tough question!! I think it’s either seeing Celine Dion in Las Vegas on my 30th birthday or watching Bryan Adams in Winnipeg from the sixth row and he just sang two hours of hit after hit (so many of his songs brought back memories of my youth!)
- What is you go-to karaoke song?
I love “Ex’s and Oh’s” by Elle King or Fire to the Rain by Adele.
