The Parents’ Guide to Online Activities for Kids

With March Break camps cancelled and schools closed until at least May 4, you might be looking for fun ideas to keep your kids busy. There are plenty of live streams to check out these days and we’re seeing a surge in fun ones for kids.

[Storytime]

  • Anishinabek Nation Youth’s “Live Storytime Today”

Anishinabek Nation’s Youth Coordinator, Sarah Blackwell is hosting a daily story time series Monday-Friday where she reads children’s books by Indigenous authors. The event is followed by a live discussion on each book.

You can tune in at 11AM on the Anishinabek Nation Youth Facebook page.

  • Dolly Parton’s “Goodnight with Dolly”

Iconic country singer, Dolly Parton will go live once a week to read children’s stories from the Imagination Library collection.

Check it out at 7PM every Thursday night on Facebook.

  • Storytime with Oliver Jeffers

Children’s book author, Oliver Jeffers, is reading stories on his Instagram page. You can check it out on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 2PM.

  • Story Time with Mac Barnett

Every day at 3PM, Mac Barnett will read one of his children’s stories until he runs out. You may also catch a live cartoon in the works! Check it out here.

[Arts ‘n Crafts]

  • Drawing lessons with children’s book authors on Booktrust

Booktrust is hosting several children’s book authors as they share their how-to-draw videos.

  • Ben Clanton’s Miximal Mondays

Self-proclaimed “authorstrator”, Ben Clanton is offering reading and drawing sessions for kids and calling them Miximal Mondays, weekly at 12:30PM. You can tune in on his Instagram and Facebook.

  • Draw Everyday with JJK 

Author and illustrator, Jarrett J. Krosoczka is bringing drawing lessons to your living room. Check out his classes on weekdays at 2PM on Youtube.

  • Lunch Doodles with Mo Willems

Kennedy Centre Artist-in-Residence, Mo Willems draws and doodles daily at 1PM. You can check them out here.

[Live Music for Kids]

  • Daily Sing Along & Play with Erin Mae

Erin Mae is bringing the entertainment for kids in the pre-school to grade 2 age range. She brings a mix of live music and playtime activities on weekdays at 1:30PM. Check it out here.

  • Makin’ Music Carolina’s Daily Live Concerts 

Every weekday at 11AM, you can tune in live with Carolina as she enriches kids’ lives with music making classes and fun. Check it out here.

  • Tom Chapin & The Chapin Sisters Stay-at-Home Free Concerts

Every weekday at 11AM, Tom Chapin and the Chapin Sisters go live for 20-30 minutes with some tunes performed as a family. You can check it out on Instagram and Facebook.

  • Mr. Jon & Friends’ Weekday Concert Series

Mr. Jon & Friends are bringing a family-friendly concert series to you every weekday morning at 11:30AM. You can stream it live on their Facebook page.

[Dance Classes for Kids]

  • Debbie Allen’s Dance Classes 

Debbie Allen is hosting a random assortment of dance classes and some are made for kids aged 3-7. Check out more info on her Instagram.

[Cooking Classes for Families]

  • $5 Dinners’ Cooking Lessons for Kids 

Every weekday at 5PM, $5 Dinners hosts cooking lessons for the whole family as part of their School Cancellation Cooking Lessons for Kids series. Check it out here.

[Nature & Museums]

  • At-Home Safari with the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden 

Although the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden itself is closed, kids are welcome to go on an at-home safari online daily at 3PM. It includes live videos of some of the animals and an activity to wrap up the at-home adventure. Check it out here.
