The city’s largest celebration of Indigenous Culture will not be happening this year.
Organizers of the 2020 Summer Solstice Indigenous Festival have announced that the event, scheduled for June 18-21 in Vincent Massey Park, has been cancelled. The official announcement comes a day after the city announced that permits for large gatherings scheduled between now and June 30 would be cancelled.
A release from the festival says, “We are happy to announce that we will be introducing new ways to create connections and share our rich and vibrant culture with a virtual program for the 2020 Summer Solstice Festival. Since our Festival is an avenue for artists, vendors and performers to share their crafts, expertise and talents, we are creating an online platform whereby they can still deliver a rich cultural experience to Canadians.”
The inaugural Summer Solstice Indigenous Music Awards scheduled for later this month have also been postponed until June of 2021.
