Staying Connected for Free in the Age of Social Distancing

As the weeks go on, you might be searching for more and more ways to stay connected to your friends beyond the usual video call.

We’ve put a list of free apps and websites together to keep you socializing when friends and loved ones feel extra far away!

For the movie loving crew:

If you’ve been missing those movie nights and popcorn with pals, this is the app you’ve been waiting for. It allows you and your friends to watch the same shows and movies together and pause it at the same time so you don’t have to worry about being a little ahead or behind. It also includes a chat feature on the other side to allow you to provide commentary and have a little fun as if you were all in the same space.

The caveat is you all will need a Netflix account to make it work. It’s available as a Google Chrome extension.

For those with niche interests:

Once upon a time, Twitch was exclusively a website to stream live gaming to the world. Now it’s become a space for artists to share music, for people to podcast and for communities to hold very specific watch parties for just plain bad movies. This is the place to dive into your unique interests with likeminded folks who want to do the same!

For board and card game lovers:

If you love a classic game like Checkers and Euchre or are more of a Remote Insensitivity fan (it’s a spin off of Cards Against Humanity!) than this is a great website to keep you busy and having fun. It’s best used when you and your friends login to the same online chat like Skype or Facebook Messenger so you can hear each other’s reactions.

For social butterflies:

Imagine if messenger was constantly in video chat mode? This is sort of like House Party. Whenever you login, you have to specify whether you are “online” or “around”. If you are, others can see your status and you can jump into a live chat at any moment. And the cool thing is, if you have different social circles or want to catch up with family, you can sort these chats into various groupings. A bonus feature to this awesome app is you can play games and have trivia parties with your friends too.

It’s available for Android, iOS, MacOS and Google Chrome.

For those who want to do a little bit of everything:

If you are a fan of chatting while playing games and streaming your favourite videos, movies and shows, the Kosmi website can do just about all of them. It’s cool because you don’t need an account but you are able to do quite a lot! You can play Nintendo and Super Nintendo games, Cards Against Humanity, Texas Holdem and stream shows from Amazon Prime, Netflix & Disney+ as a group.

For those who just want to catch up:

And of course, if you just want to see your loved ones and best friends for a hangout, you can always trust these apps:
