COVID-19 Ottawa:
Ottawa Public Health has clarified the current number of cases in the Capital. Staff say two new cases have been reported Wednesday, and that two cases were removed from the total.
The total case number remaining at 2036 lead to widespread reports of the first day without a new case since the first one was reported back on March 11. No new deaths have been reported. That total remains at 260.
Nearly 84 per cent of patients have recovered.
COVID-19 Ontario:
Ontario has 190 new cases, and 12 more deaths.
That brings the total to 32,744, continuing a steady growth rate of 0.6 per cent over the day before. The total includes 2,550 deaths and 27,784 resolved cases.
Ontario Emergency Orders Extended, More Legislation Passed or Introduced:
The provincial government is extending its existing emergency orders until the end of June.
Premier Doug Ford said the government will continue to look at each of the measures to see if any can be adjusted or dropped.
Meanwhile, a temporary ban on commercial evictions is being introduced Wednesday. The government says it will protect commercial tenants from being locked out or having their assets seized due to the pandemic.
Ontario has also passed legislation it says will protect farmers from animal rights activists who trespass on their property. The legislation first introduced late last year hikes fines for trespassing on farms and food-processing facilities and makes it illegal to obstruct trucks carrying farm animals.
First Nations Chiefs Upset With Lack of Commitment From New Brunswick Government:
The New Brunswick government says it agrees that Indigenous people should lead some kind of review into two recent fatal police shootings involving First Nations members, but it’s concerned a public inquiry would take too long.
Aboriginal affairs minister Jake Stewart says Premier Blaine Higgs recognizes there is systemic bias and racism against Indigenous people in New Brunswick’s police and justice systems, and is committed to meaningful change.
However chiefs representing six First Nations who met with government leaders today say they are disappointed that Higgs refused to commit to a formal, independent inquiry and the implementation of any recommendations.
Police Want to Hear From Stabbing Witnesses:
Ottawa Police are trying to find two men wanted in connection with an overnight stabbing and assault in Centretown.
Investigators say a man was stabbed by one man, and assaulted by another, on Murray Street around 12:30 am Wednesday. The victim remains in hospital in stable condition. Anyone with more information is asked to call police at 613-236-1222, ext. 5166, or Crime Stoppers, at 1-800-222-8477
2020 Carp Fair Canceled:
An annual Ottawa tradition for 157 years is the latest event to be canceled due to the pandemic.
Organizers have announced that the Carp Fair will not take place this year, due to concerns for the safety of staff, volunteers, and guests. It is scheduled to return next September.
