Cody Coyote dropped a new music video on October 1st for his song, which hit #1 on the Indigenous Music Countdown, “Manidoo Dewe’igan” from his 2019 album, Ma’iinganag. The music video will take you on a journey through Cody’s upbringing as an Indigenous youth and the racism and bullying he faced. Cody shared that these instances led him “down a road of violence, substance abuse, gang involvement and self destruction.”
He went onto share that “having the courage to share this part of my story has taken quite some time but I feel ready to do so now in hopes that it may help someone else undergoing similar experiences. My father was a part of the 60’s Scoop and it took me 25 years to reconnect with my blood relatives from his side of the family. As we’ve released this new music video, I am currently spending time in the traditional territory of my ancestors, Matachewan First Nation, where I have discovered much about my bloodline and have continued to reclaim my language and culture while being here.”
The Manidoo Dewe’igan music video stars local Indigenous youth, Theland Kicknosway, a beloved hoop dancer, the youngest recipient of the Indspire award and a rising TikTok star.
Cody plans to show this video in his public speaking with youth for anti-bullying presentations and at juvenile detention centres to spread a message of change.
“Manidoo Dewe’igan” is now available on all platforms including YouTube, Spotify, iTunes, Google Play, TikTok and more!
