Despite a global pandemic, the film industry was able to put out a diverse range of flicks in 2020. The 93rd Oscars nominees were announced Monday morning by Priyanka Chopra-Jonas and Nick Jonas! Here’s what you need to know.
David Fincher’s, Mank, came out ahead with the most nominations at ten. These included Best Picture, Director, Actor and Actress. Close behind are The Father, Judas and the Black Messiah, Nomadland, Sound of Metal, The Trial of the Chicago 7, and Minari, with six nominations each, including a nom for Best Picture. Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom wasn’t far behind with five nominations, with five including one for late Chadwick Boseman for Best Actor, as well as one for Viola Davis in Best Actress category.
History has been made with this year’s nominations. Two women were nominated for Best Director, including Emerald Fennell for Promising Young Woman and Chloé Zhao for Nomadland. Chloé Zhao is the first woman of colour to ever receive a nomination for Best Director. As well, Yuh-Jung Youn received a nomination for Best Supporting Actress in Minari, making her the very first South Korean to receive a nomination in the category.
Another exciting set of nods go to Borat Subsequent Movie Film, which is up for a couple awards as well, with Best Supporting Actress for Maria Baklova Adapted Screenplay
