Canada Goes For Gold In Women’s Soccer

Team Canada made history this morning at Kashima Stadium, when they defeated the United States in women’s soccer, and secured a spot in the gold medal match against Sweden. This will be the first time in the history of the games that the women’s soccer team has competed for the gold medal. They earned their spot after a 1-0 victory over the United States early this morning, when London, Ontario’s Jessie Fleming scored the only goal of the game.

Revenge For London

However, this match was always more than just a game. It was a chance for redemption and revenge. During the 2012 Olympics in London, the U.S. won 4-3 against Canada. During the match, the referee made many controversial calls, including a call that Canadian goalkeeper Erin McLeod had held the ball for more than six seconds. That call in particular resulted in a penalty kick that eventually won the match for the U.S.. This left fans and players alike feeling robbed. At the time, Canadian captain Christine Sinclair made a statement that  “Obviously, we’re disappointed and upset. We felt that the referee took it away from us, so, yes, we are disappointed. We feel like we didn’t lose, we feel like it was taken from us. It’s a shame in a game like that, which is so important, that the ref decided the result before the game started.” You can read more about how Team Canada felt at the time by clicking here.

Changing Colours

Thankfully, this time around, Team Canada is singing a much happier tune. Sinclair made a statement after today’s match, proclaiming “Our goal coming here was to change the colour. Two back-to-back bronzes. We were kind of sick of that. And this team, wow. What a performance. What a fight. One more to go.” Fleming was also ecstatic, noting that “It’s really special to get to contribute to the win. There’s a group of players on our team who have worked on this for 20 years. Seeing them cry after that match means so much.” For more of Team Canada’s thoughts on today’s game, click here.
