September 30th marks Orange Shirt Day. It’s a day to raise awareness about Indigenous history in Canada and the trauma and injustice faced at residential schools. The National Arts Centre’s Indigenous Theatre’s Indigenous Cultural Resident, Algonquin Anishinabeg artist, Mairi Brascoupe will deliver a virtual beadwork class leading up to Orange Shirt Day. While learning the art form by beading an orange shirt pin, participants will also learn about the importance of the day.
The workshop is open to folks 16 years and older at all levels of beadwork experience. It takes place in two sessions on September 20th and 27th. Learn more here.
