Illumination’s Super Mario Bros. Film Announces Cast and December 2022 Release

All the way back in the distant year of 2017, it was announced that video-game giant Nintendo was teaming up with Universal and animation studio Illumination, in order to bring a Super Mario Bros. movie to the big screen. After years of secrecy, Super Mario Bros. creator Shigeru Miyamoto announced the cast for the upcoming film on September 23rd during a Nintendo Direct livestream, and let’s just say they went for some interesting casting choices.

At the top of the cast list is Chris Pratt as Mario. Joining him are The Queen’s Gambit’s, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, It’s Always Sunny In Philidelphia’s, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, and Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong. Miyamoto also noted that while he might not be reprising his role from the video games, acclaimed voice actor Charles Martinet “will be appearing in surprise cameos in the movie.” Martinet has been the voice of Mario since the mid-’90s, as well as voicing Luigi, Wario, and others in the video games. While this announcement set the internet ablaze with opinions, we only have one question on our mind: Is Chris Pratt going to try and do an Italian accent for Mario

We’ll have to wait a little while longer for the answer. Nintendo and Illumination’s Super Mario Bros. is currently set to hit theatres on December 21, 2022.
